Estrus refers to the phase when the female is sexually receptive ("in heat").
Animals go into ‘heat’ to signal to other animals mating time is ripe for potential pregnancy. Ovulation is about to occur. Animals in heat will no doubt become pregnant if a viable female and male mate. For years now, humans have excluded themselves from the estrus cycle. Researchers have termed this ‘concealed ovulation’.
However, most women have known for eons that there were certain times when they could become pregnant; as they felt more sexual desire. One of the problems of rhythm natural planning, advocated by the Catholic Church, and the reason for its biggest failure, was that women were to abstain from sex during a period of the month when they felt the more lustful.
Now scientists conclude humans do go into heat. After watching several lap dancers, some who were taking oral contraceptives (therefore, never ovulating) and those with normal menses, they observed that women with normal cycles received more tips during the ovulation or estrus period. During non-fertile periods, both the non-fertile women and the ones who were on oral contraceptives received the same amount of tips.
The dancers somehow conveyed to the men when they were ‘in heat’. How this was done is still not clear. Was it due to some sort of smell, which signaled the men? Were the women behaving consciously or unconsciously? Some researchers note an increase in confidence by women who are ovulating.
Whatever the process, next time you are in a location where lap dancing is performed, perhaps you should observe more closely.
