According to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, abnormal liver test results were seen in healthy adults who took maximum recommended daily doses of Tylenol for only two weeks.

After two weeks of taking four grams, or 8 extra strength tablets, daily, nearly 40 percent of participants had abnormal test results signaling liver damage.

This has raised concerns that even recommended amounts of the popular painkiller might lead to liver damage.

"I would urge the public not to exceed four grams a day. This is a drug that has a rather narrow safety window," said a study co-author, Dr. Neil Kaplowitz of the University of Southern California. Kaplowitz also advised heavy drinkers not to take more than two grams of Tylenol daily.
