Treatment Options for Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancers

In general, the treatment for biliary tract cancers depends on the type and stage of cancer as well as on age, overall health, feelings, and personal preferences.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the goal of any treatment is to eliminate the cancer completely. When that isn't possible, the focus may be on preventing the tumor from growing or causing more harm. In some cases, an approach called palliative care may be best. This is aimed not at removing or slowing the disease, but at helping relieve symptoms and making the patient as comfortable as possible.

Treatment options for gallbladder cancer include surgery and radiation. For bile duct cancer, surgery is the best choice. Stenting is also possible to keep the duct open.

Clinical trials are also an option since standard treatment is seldom effective in advanced bilary tract cancers.
