A study in the Journal of Preventive Medicie indicates that American women veterans "... receiving care at VA medical facilities during 2000, 68.4% were at least overweight ... with 37.4% classified as obese." Among the men, "... 73.0% were at least overweight, 32.9% were obese." Among women, obesity prevalence increased into the sixth and seventh decade of life before prevalence began to decline."
"By race/ethnicity, Native American women (40.7%) and men (35.1%) had the highest prevalence of obesity."
Poor diet and physical inactivity, primary causes of obesity, may overtake smoking to become the nation's leading cause of preventable death. (Weight Management Program of the Veterans Health Administration)
