New Treatment Options for Depression and Chronic Pain Focus on Women

A new study published June 15, 2006, in the European Journal of Pain found that female patients with painful long-term conditions, such as arthritis and back pain, suffer from higher level of depression and report greater disability than men in the same situation.

The researchers conclude that doctors could help reduce the disability experienced by women suffering from chronic conditions by treating their depression. “For women in particular," the authors say, "targeting depression may help reduce the disability associated with chronic pain.”
