Diagnosing Depression

Depression is a serious illness that can take a variety of forms. In fact, there are no less than nine different kinds of depression officially recognized by the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., published by the American Psychiatric Association.

For a diagnosis of any kind of depression, the diagnostic criteria in the DSM IV have to be met.

The nine types of depression are:

  • Major Depressive Episode
  • Manic Episode
  • Mixed Episode
  • Hypomanic Episode
  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Dysthymic Disorder
  • Bipolar I Disorder
  • Bipolar II Disorder
  • Cyclothymic Disorder
