Even If We Can't Prevent Anorexia, We Can Intervene -- Knowing The Danger Signs Is The First Step

Intervening in a person's life to save them from serious illness is an act of loving courage. Because of the apparently deep-seated causes of anorexia, prevention may not be an option. However, there are danger signs that one can be aware of and act on.

According to the experts at ANRED, Inc., an organization devoted solely to anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, the danger signs include:

  • Food behaviors
  • Appearance and body image behaviors
  • Exercise behaviors
  • Thoughts
  • Feelings
  • Self-injury and self-harm: cutting, burning, etc.
  • Social behaviors

You can read postings from young people with eating disorders that reflect some of these behaviors on our Anorexia Treatment page.
