The Harvard Health Letter (June 2006) has some recommendations to help you prepare for Avian Flu.
They suggest that you should get a regular flu shot in the fall. Although it won't protect you from the Avian flu, at least you won't risk getting both versions of the flu at the same time.
Anti viral medicines are problematic: using them might create resistant strains of the Avian flu. It has not been proven that medications being developed will be effective.
What will be effective is washing your hands often and staying away from birds and their droppings.
If there is a pandemic, many people will not be working, and society will not function normally. Supplies of needed goods may be difficult to get, so stock up on water and nonperishable food.
