Although roughly half of measles cases that occur in U.S. are a result of residents returning from visits to foreign countries, and the risk of exposure to measles in the United States is low because of the high population immunity achieved through vaccination, there are cases of measles in the US. Complications can lead to death, so it is important to know the symptoms of measles.
The Centers for Disease Control and prevention says that "Measles is an acute, highly communicable viral disease that begins with a fever, conjunctivitis, cough, and Koplik spots on the buccal mucosa. A characteristic red, blotchy rash appears around the third day of illness, beginning on the face and becoming generalized. Measles is frequently complicated by middle ear infection or diarrhea."
