Insect Bites & Stings

General Information

Bees Sting Once and Die -- Hornets and Wasps Go On and On

When a hornet or wasp visits you, it's best to be cautious.

The sting of a hornet or wasp delivers 2-15 micrograms of a nasty poison designed to paralyze prey or kill enemies. Since the shaft is smooth, the hornet or wasp can withdraw it easily and attack again. To make matters worse for their victims, the venom contains a pheromone which alarms others in the area and literally invites them to the battle (or the feast).

Avoiding Brown Recluse Spiders in the South Central Mid-West

Brown recluse spiders found in the south mid-central part of the US (be sure to use the link to look at the map and photos) can produce necrotizing wounds. Be wary also of the hobo spider and the yellow sac spider. The hobo spider may be found in the Pacific Northwest as far east as Montana and south into Oregon and Utah. The two yellow sac species are found all over the United States.
