Signs & Symptoms

Acne: Every Bump Described

Acne can be characterized by skin lesions usually seen on face; but can also occur on back and chest.

Below is a list of how various lesions are identified.

  • Open and closed comedones (i.e. blackheads and whiteheads)
  • Erythematous papules (i.e. red bumps which are 3-10 mm in size. Usually resolve into a permanently hyper-pigmented area on skin.)
  • Pustules (i.e. bumps which have pus inside)

Signs and Symptoms of Acne

Acne takes several forms:

  • Whiteheads - clogged hair follicles under the surface of the skin
  • Blackheads - clogged hair follicles that are open to the surface of the skin
  • Pimples - inflamed or infected hair follicles
