How Much Is "Too Much"?

Drinking becomes too much when it causes or elevates the risk for alcohol-related problems or complicates the management of other health problems. According to epidemiologic research, men who drink 5 or more standard drinks in a day (or 15 or more per week) and women who drink 4 or more in a day (or 8 or more per week) are at increased risk for alcohol-related problems.

Why Do People Take Drugs?

Why do people take drugs?

In general, people begin taking drugs for a variety of reasons:

1. To feel good. Most abused drugs produce intense feelings of pelasure. This initial sensation of euphoria is followed by other effects, which differ with the type of drug used. For example, with stimulants such as cocaine, the "high" is followed by feelings of power, self-confidence, and increased energy. In contrast, the euphoria caused by opiates such as heroin is followed by feelings of relaxation and satisfaction.

TeenAgers and Binge Drinking

Be aware that nearly half of high school children drink alcohol and do so to the point of intoxication. Binge drinking, or having more than 5 drinks, is common among those that drink.
