Treating Peripheral Artery Disease

The treatment of peripheral artery disease focuses on lifestyle changes, medicines, and surgery or special procedures. The goals are preventative and palliative, rather than trying to cure the condition.

Lifestyle Changes

  • Quitting smoking
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Lowering high cholesterol levels
  • Lowering blood glucose levels if you have diabetes

Medications

Specific medications may be prescribed to lower high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, thin the blood to prevent clots from forming due to low blood flow, dissolve blood clots that have formed, and help improve pain in the legs resulting from walking or climbing stairs (claudication).

Surgery and Special Procedures

  • Bypass grafting surgery
  • Angioplasty
  • Cell and gene therapies
