What Is High Cholesterol And Why Is It a Problem?

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance found in every cell of the body, used in cell membranes and as a building block for some hormones. The body makes all the cholesterol it needs. Any cholesterol in the diet is extra.

When there's too much cholesterol in your blood, fatty deposits in the blood vessels may develop, which can eventually hinder sufficient blood flow to the arteries.

If that happens, the heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack. Decreased blood flow to the brain can cause a stroke.

There are no symptoms of high cholesterol, but a blood test will indicate cholesterol levels.
