Diagnosing Heart Failure

To confirm a diagnosis of heart failure, the doctor looks at three areas:

  • Medical history
  • Physical Exam
  • Tests

Tests include:

  • Blood tests
  • B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) blood test
  • Chest X-ray
  • Echocardiogram (or echo)
  • Ejection fraction (EF)
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)
