There are a lot of harmful trans fats within chips and ice cream. The trans fats are what makes you salivate at the thought of eating these favorite foods, and keeps you coming back for more. However, you can eat your way quickly to a heart attack if you are not careful of the amount of trans fats you eat.
Therefore, the American Heart Association has joined hands with industry to formulate plans for decreasing trans fats, while keeping the wonderful, and to some folks euphoric, taste.
Can this be done? The resolution still remains ambivalent as to whether a food can be tasty and healthy at the same time. Substitutions of fats will be tried, though. Linolenic and oleic soybean oil, or low-linolenic/mid-oleic soybean oil, or high-oleic canola and sunflower oils, alone or blended are some thoughts on fat substitution.
Before the consumer gloats too much about not having to eliminate their favorite foods, one needs to realize that these changes will not come without an associated cost. The costs will be passed along to the consumer a lot easier and more quickly that the development of healthier products.
