Risk Factors for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) / Coronary Artery Disease

There are a number of risk factors for coronary heart disease. Some of them are just part of who we are and cannot be reduced, while others can be changed.

Risk Factors That Cannot Be Changed

  • Increasing age
  • Male sex (gender)
  • Heredity (including Race)*

Risk Factors That Can Be Changed

  • Tobacco smoke
  • High blood cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity and overweight
  • Diabetes mellitus

Two other factors affecting heart disease are alcohol consumption and stress.
