Treatment of high levels of LDL cholesterol with statins lowers the cholesterol, but it also reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and chest pain by slowing or stopping the buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries that feed the heart. This study combined high-dose statin treatment with intravascular ultrasound which enabled the researchers to actually see the plaque buildup.
