Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of Americans. Diabetes has severe consequences. Amputations, kidney failure, blindness, and congestive heart failure are known outcomes of the ravages of this disease.
However, a recent study indicated that even with patients without diabetes, that for increases on a gradient scale within normal fasting blood sugar values, congestive heart failure increased by 1.1 hazard ratio. These findings were constant, even when smoking, previous heart attacks, and high blood pressures were taken out of the equation.
This means that blood sugar levels should be viewed much as we currently view blood pressure, or cholesterol levels. All levels are on a continuum, and as numbers increase, so do these risk of serious illnesses.
