Diagnosing and Testing for Sickle Cell Anemia

According to Lab Tests Online, testing for sickle cell can identify the following indicators:

  • the presence of hemoglobin S
  • the presence of other abnormal hemoglobin variants
  • evaluation of the status and number of the patient’s red blood cells (RBCs), and/or
  • the presence of one or more altered hemoglobin gene copies.

There is one test purely for screening, three tests for screening, diagnosis, and confirmation, and a few more tests specifically to evaluate RBCs.
