Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate are Among the More Common Birth Defects

Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth abnormalities of the mouth and lip which occur when the sides of the lip and the roof of the mouth do not fuse together as they should.

Cleft lip and/or cleft palette are caused by multiple genes inherited from both parents, as well as environmental factors that scientists do not yet fully understand.

To see what this condition looks like, go to the Gallery of Cleft Advocate, an organization dedicated to information and inspiration for people who have this problem.
