Pre-Teens Need Vaccinations

CDC recommends 3 additional vaccines for Pre-Teens. For some, it's because immunity has worn off, and for others, its because their risk of getting the disease is higher. Because they are recommended and not mandated a lot of insurance plans will not pay for them.

  1. Whooping cough: The CDC recommends that a booster be given before the child enters high school. The initial whooping cough shot was given prior to grade school, but immunity has gradually worn off. There have been several cases of whooping cough reported in the Chicago area, and other big cities. Whooping cough can last for weeks or months, and may lead to pneumonia. Deaths may occur. The cost is approximately $40.
  2. Meningitis: Meningitis is rare, but deadly. It is estimated that 10% of those children who get meningitis will die from it. The cost is approximately $90.
  3. Cervical Cancer: This vaccine prevents against the HPV which causes 70% of the cervical cancers. The CDC recommends this vaccine for all girls 12 years old. This one is the expensive shot, and can cost up to $400.

With low income families, Medicaid should be explored to see if costs may be covered under that program.

Parents who do not want their children to have any vaccinations on the basis of religious beliefs, do have the right to opt out. Written statements are required.
