Regular eye examinations for everyone is the best preventative measure, and strict adherence to a treatment protocol if you have the disease is the best way to prevent further loss of vision.
However, there has been some promising research in glaucoma prevention:
- When glaucoma eyedrops were given daily to people with elevated eye pressure (above 24 mm Hg), they reduced eye pressure an average of 22%.
- Related to this finding, daily use of eyedrops can reduce the risk of developing glaucoma by nearly half in blacks with elevated eye pressure.*
- Cholesterol-lowering medications reduced the risk of open-angle glaucoma, especially for people who already have cardiovascular disease.
* Please see our discussion on race as a risk factor for disease.
