Glaucoma -- A Hidden, Insidious Disease That Can Steal Your Eyesight

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steal sight without warning.

According the American Health Assistance Foundation, in the United States, approximately 2.2 million people age 40 and older have glaucoma, and of these, as many as 120,000 are blind due the disease. The number of Americans with glaucoma is estimated to increase to 3.3 million by the year 2020.

In the early stages of the disease, there may be no symptoms. Experts estimate that half of the people affected by glaucoma may not know they have it.

There is no cure for glaucoma—yet. However, medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. The appropriate treatment depends upon the type of glaucoma among other factors. Early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease.

Adult glaucoma falls into two categories—open angle glaucoma and closed angle glaucoma.
