This information comes from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Treatment options for sinusitis include:
- Use of a humidifier
- Use of an air conditioner
- Attaching electrostatic filters to heating and air conditioning equipment
There are also activities to avoid:
- Cigarette smoking
- Air pollutants in general*
- Alcoholic beverages
- Swimming in pools treated with chlorine
- Diving
- Flying, but if you have to fly, take decongestant nose drops or inhalers before the flight to avoid pressure building up in your head during ascent and descent
* [Editor's Note: In particular, do not wear -- and try to avoid being around -- perfume and other scented personal care products, including fabric softeners. Perfume is a respiratory irritant, as defined by the National Institutes of Health. You can see for yourself why by reading the list of common chemicals in fragranced products.]
