Risk Factors for Hearing Loss in Adults and Children

There are a few known risk factors for adult hearing loss:

  • Diabetes
  • Blood vessel disorders, including high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis
  • A tumor or a blood clot that affects the hearing part of the brain or the auditory nerves
  • Multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases
  • Trauma to the ear or a penetrating injury
  • Chronic exposure to very loud noises
  • Lack of oxygen during birth

Hearing loss in children is commonly caused by otitis media, the most frequently diagnosed disease in infants and young children.
