There are a few known risk factors for adult hearing loss:
- Diabetes
- Blood vessel disorders, including high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis
- A tumor or a blood clot that affects the hearing part of the brain or the auditory nerves
- Multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases
- Trauma to the ear or a penetrating injury
- Chronic exposure to very loud noises
- Lack of oxygen during birth
Hearing loss in children is commonly caused by otitis media, the most frequently diagnosed disease in infants and young children.
