What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes occurs only during pregnancy. Like other forms of diabetes, gestational diabetes affects the way the body uses blood sugar (glucose) — its main source of fuel.

If untreated or uncontrolled, gestational diabetes can result in a variety of health problems for both mother and baby.

Although in many cases glucose levels return to normal after the baby is born, a person who has had gestational diabetes should continue to have their blood sugar tested at least annually and use preventative measures to ensure they do not develop Type 2 diabetes.
