Moles can easily be seen during a physical examination, and it is a good idea to have a body scan for atypical moles every 3 years up to age 40, and annually after that.
A body scan involves the examination of your skin from head to toe, including scalp, palms, the soles of the feet and the skin between the buttocks.
If the doctor suspects that a mole may be cancerous, s/he may take a sample of the tissue (biopsy) and submit the biopsy for microscopic examination.
