Moles are small skin marks caused by pigment-producing cells in the skin. They can be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and some contain hair. Moles are commonly about a half inch across or less.
Most moles are dark brown or black, but some are skin-colored or yellowish. They can change over time and often respond to hormonal changes.
Another type of mole, the "atypical mole," is larger than the normal mole and is not always round. They can be tan to dark brown, on a pink background. These types of moles may occur anywhere on the body.
Benign though they generally are, some moles may develop into skin cancer (melanoma). One should monitor atypical moles for changes in color, shape and/or diameter, and should avoid sun exposure as this may accelerate changes to these moles.
