Dry skin, or Xerosis, results when the skin, which needs adequate moisture, is unable to retain the amount of moisture it needs.
Xerosis is especially common during the winter in cold climates, because central heating is very drying to the skin. The problem is complicated by simple daily routines, such as bathing and towel drying, which may actually remove moisture from the skin. Modifying bathing routines will help preserve the skin's moisture.
Here are some tips to prevent or relieve dry skin:
- Bathe once a day in lukewarm, rather than hot, water, for about 15 minutes or less.
- Avoid using harsh soaps that dry the skin.
- Limit the use of deodorant soaps, which are often harsh and drying.
- Avoid hard rubbing with washcloth or towel.
- Use a moisturizer right after bathing. Areas of the skin exposed to the sun should be moisturized with a product that has sun protection of at least SPF 15.
- Avoid scented laundry products. Buy the fragrance-free brands and avoid dryer sheets completely.
- Use a humidifier during the central heating season (45-55% humidity is recommended).
