Dry skin, also known as Xerosis, usually is not serious, although it is unsightly. In some cases, if the skin is not moisturized sufficiently and preventative measures are not taken, deep fissures and cracks can open up, bleed, and hurt. Fortunately, most dry skin conditions are preventable, resulting from environmental factors that can be wholly or partially controlled.
There is, however, a group of inherited disorders causing more serious dry skin conditions with severe enough symptoms to be both physicially and psychologically distressing.
Chronic or severe dry skin problems may require a dermatologist's evaluation, since they may be caused by an underlying disorder or simply another dry-skin problem. To see a list of related skin problems, click here.
