No tests are needed to diagnose dermatitis because the external evidence of skin irritation is in itself diagnostic.
However, it is another matter to find out what causes it. If everytime you put your hands in soapy dishwater your hands turn fiery red, you probably react to that particular brand of soap, or the irritation could be heat related.
Patch testing is a way doctors can test substances to tell what causes the irritation.
