There are two basic types of acne, inflammatory and non-inflammatory.
Whiteheads and Blackheads
The simplest and least problematic type of acne is non-inflammatory acne, characterized by whiteheads and blackheads. When one of our pores gets blocked, bacteria starts to grow. When the contents stay below the surface, it's a whitehead. When the contents are partially exposed, skin pigmentation turns them black and you've got a blackhead.
Papules, Pustules (zits), Nodules, and Cysts
A papule is an inflammed pore, but this does not yet a "zit" make. When the inflammation makes it's way to the surface, the pimple forms.
Nodules and Cysts qualify as lesions. When inflammed, they can collapse or explode. These can be painful to the touch or enlarged and filled with pus.
Inflammatory acne is a serious problem and may cause deep pitting scars. Medication and even surgery may be required to treat it.
