Acne: Every Bump Described

Acne can be characterized by skin lesions usually seen on face; but can also occur on back and chest.

Below is a list of how various lesions are identified.

  • Open and closed comedones (i.e. blackheads and whiteheads)
  • Erythematous papules (i.e. red bumps which are 3-10 mm in size. Usually resolve into a permanently hyper-pigmented area on skin.)
  • Pustules (i.e. bumps which have pus inside)
  • Nodules (i.e. abnormal clump of cells which are tender to the touch. Usually caused hyper-pigmented scarring when gone)
  • Cysts (i.e. A cyst (soft "c", rhymes with "list") is a closed sac having a distinct membrane. They may contain air, fluids, or semi-solid material. A collection of pus is called an abscess, not a cyst. Once formed, the cyst will remain in the tissue permanently and can only be removed by surgery.
  • Scars. Acne skin lesions can leave ugly scars on the face, that will last a lifetime. Usually, however, the scars are non-existent and/or minimal. With women, make-up can easily cover up any scarring, if desired.

The male gender usually has an earlier onset and more severe cases than females. Females commonly have premenstrual flare-ups.
