Any discussion about the causes of nonmelanoma skin cancer must include risk factors.
The following are known risk factors for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas (but do not apply to other forms of nonmelanoma skin cancer such as Kaposi sarcoma and cutaneous lymphoma:
- Previous skin cancer
- Too much exposure to sunlight
- Fair skin
- Male gender
- Chemical exposure
- Radiation exposure
- Long-term or severe skin inflammation or injury
- Treatment of psoriasis
- Xeroderma pigmentosum
- Basal cell nevus syndrome
- Reduced immunity (in patients who have had organ transplants)
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Smoking
- Genetic susceptibility
