According to the Mayo Clinic, diagnosing gallbladder cancer early on is difficult because the gallbladder is hidden behind the liver and is relatively inaccessible.
Also, signs and symptoms don't develop until late in the disease. When symptoms do appear, they can easily be mistaken for those of many other conditions.
Tests that can help identify gallbladder and bile duct cancers include:
- Blood tests
- Ultrasound
- Computerized tomography (CT) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatiography (ERCP)
- Laparoscopy
- Biopsy
Staging is also important if cancer is found. Follow the link below for full details.
