According to the Mayo Clinic, in most cases, looking inside the eye during a routine examination will be enough to detect and diagnose any tumors or other abnormalities.
If the doctor suspects eye melanoma, there are a number of imaging tests that will help clarify a diagnosis:
- Ultrasound
- Angiography
If these tests confirm the diagnosis, the doctor may also recommend additional diagnostic procedures to determine whether the cancer has spread (metastasized) to other parts of the body.
Eye melanoma can spread through your bloodstream. The liver and lungs are the organs most often affected.
