Involuntary contraction of muscles can cause stiffness and tightness because of the brain injury caused by the stroke. Balance can also be affected causing serious falls. Central pain syndrome (thalamic pain) can also result.
Speech may be slurred, sounds may become overwhelming, and pronunciation may be affected.
When difficulty with swallowing is present, it can lead to poor nutrition, pneumonia and increased disability.
Rehab is possible with strength and fine motor skill training. Many recommandations are made in the article.
