Stroke Prevention and Healthy Lifestyle Go Together

Preventing a stroke is related to taking care of our bodies and having a healthy lifestyle. The most important factors are:

  • Controlling high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Lowering cholesterol and saturated fat intake
  • Stopping smoking
  • Controlling diabetes
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Managing stress
  • Drinking alcohol in moderation, if at all (no matter what anybody says about alcohol being "good for you")
  • Don't use illicit drugs - many are established high risk factors for stroke
  • Following a healthy diet
