Causes and Effects of Spinal Cord Injury

According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common causes of spinal cord inury in the US are:

  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Acts of violence
  • Falls
  • Sports and recreation injuries
  • Diseases

There are two types of spinal cord injury: traumatic and non-traumatic.

Causes of Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

  • Sudden, traumatic blow to the spine that fractures, dislocates, crushes or compresses one or more vertebrae
  • Gunshot or knife wound that penetrates and cuts the spinal cord
  • Additional damage usually occurs over days or weeks because of bleeding, swelling, inflammation and fluid accumulation in and around the spinal cord

Causes of Non-Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Blood vessel problems or bleeding
  • Inflammation or infections, or
  • Disk degeneration of the spine
