A flashover usually occurs when someone is struck by lightning: the skin conducts the flash over the body.
Mobile or cordless phones should not be used or even carried outdoors during a thunder storm, because they stop the flashover, and that leads to an increased risk for internal injuries, paralysis, or death.
Three fatal cases have been recorded.
