Can drugs Induce Parkinson's Disease?

Drugs can induce the Cardinal or Motor Disturbances of Parkinson's Disease. These drugs all interact with the dopamine hormone to alter the normal level within the brain.

Examples of these drugs are the following:
1. Neuroleptics: Drugs used for Mental Illness such as Thorazine or Haldol

2. Metochloramide or Reglan: Drug used to control nausea & vomiting

3. Reserpine: Drug used in the past to treat high blood pressure.

4. Cardiac Medications such as amiodarone or calcium channel blockers.

5. Antidepressants such as amoxapine

If a person with Parkinson's Disease takes any of the above drugs, it may induce worse symptoms, or a situation where medical intervention is required.
