Diagnosing Hydrocephalus

According to the Mayo Clinic, diagnosis is different for the two main types of Hydrocephalus.

Diagnosing congenital hydrocephalus

  • Prenatal ultrasound
  • Observation of an infant's large head that seems to be rapidly increasing in size
  • Ultrasound, if the soft spot on an infant's head is still open, to distinguish between a normal large head (macrocephaly) and hydrocephalus

Diagnosing acquired hydrocephalus

  • Careful medical history and a physical and neurological examination
  • Imagine tests (X-rays, a computerized tomography (CT) scan, or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

If these pictures reveal hydrocephalus or other abnormalities, referral to a brain surgeon (neurosurgeon) for further evaluation and treatment is likely.
