There are two types of treatment for migraines: preventive and acute. As with all types of treatment, if the patient is nauseated or vomiting, then any medication should not be given orally (pill form).
Acute Treatment
Acute treatment may consist of:
• over the counter analgesics, such as ibuprofen, or
• prescription drugs like the triptans
• opioids (i.e. vicodin). NOTE: there is research to indicate that opioids may cause a hyperanalgesic effect, or more pain).
Preventive Treatment
Preventive treatment can be non-medicine whereby the person reviews and attempts to remove the ‘triggers’ of the migraine; or medication.
Typical medications include:
• beta blockers (i.e. Inderal),
• anticonvulsants (i.e. Divalproex or Depakote), or
• serotonin blockers (i.e. methersergide or Sansert)
