What is Dyslexia? The Answer Is Not Without Controversy.

What dyslexia is, is a controversial subject.

The Conventional Wisdom

According to the Mayo Clinic, dyslexia is an impairment in the brain's ability to translate written images received from the eyes into meaningful language, and is caused by a malfunction in certain areas of the brain concerned with language. It is also called specific reading disability and is the most common learning disability in children.

An Alternative Theory

Another theory is that dyslexia is not just a severe reading disorder. And it is not due to brain damage as traditionally thought for the past century. It is a syndrome of many and varied symptoms affecting over 40 million American children and adults.

This theory posits that dyslexia and ADD are both caused by a simple signal-scrambling disturbance of inner-ear (cerebellar-vestibular) origin.
