A Diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Cannot be Confirmed Until After Death

Although certain tests can help identify CJD, only a brain biopsy or an examination of brain tissue after death (autopsy) can definitively confirm the presence of CJD or vCJD.

Physicians use medical and personal history, a neurological exam, and certain diagnostic tests to make an accurate but tentative diagnosis. These tests include:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Spinal fluid tests
