According to a recent long-term study, when entering adolescence, girls with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit fewer symptoms of hyperactivity, but
- continue to lag behind peers academically and,
- have a greater tendency toward other emotional and behavioral disorders as well as for substance abuse.
These results were from a UC Berkeley five-year follow up study of one of the largest samples of girls with ADHD ever examined.
[Editor's Note: These findings complicate matters for parents, school counselors, and clinicians. When it comes to understanding a problem and treating it, how do you know if it is ADHD or some other illness? It could be easy to prescribe additional or incorrect medication if mistaking the symptomatic behavior for something other than a manifestation of ADHD. We can only hope smart parents, school counselors and doctors will all pay close attention to patient history to help them know what to do.]
