Lyme Disease is spread by the bite of a deer tick infected with a particular bacteria. So when considering risk factors for this illness, it's location, location, location.
The most common risk factors are:
- Spending time in wooded or grassy areas, especially in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Wisconsin and California, where deer ticks are most prevalant.
- Having exposed skin.
- Not removing ticks promptly or properly. If you remove a tick within two days, your risk of acquiring Lyme disease is low — about 1 percent.
