Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution has been linked to the serious eye infection Acanthamoeba keratitis.

The CDC found that, out of 46 patients who had developed Acanthamoeba, more than half had used Complete MoisturePlus. According to the CDC, those who used Complete solution had at least seven times the risk of infection than those who did not.

Acanthamoeba keratitis is caused by a parasite and can result in permanent visual impairment or blindness. Some with the infection have to undergo corneal transplants.

The infection is caused by Acanthamoeba castellani, a soil amoeba that is also commonly found in water, swimming pools and hot tubs. Contact lens wearers are at increased risk if they use water to clean lenses or cases, or swim while wearing their lenses.

AMO, the maker of Complete MoisturePlus, has issued a recall of the contact lens solution. You should discontinue use of the solution immediately and replace any lens cases that have come in contact with the solution.

While manufacturers have advised users to throw out the solution and lens storage cases, there have been instances where doctors were unable to diagnose the infection from the patient’s eye, but were able to find the parasite by testing lens cases.

While the infection is not common, you should contact your eye doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Sensation of something being in your eye
  • Eye pain
  • Eye irritation
  • Eye redness
  • Excessive Tearing
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Blurred Vision
